Image to SVG converter for lasers

Turn a logo into clean vector shapes, a photo into a line drawing or pencil sketch, or shading into separate power layers. Download at the exact size you need. Free, with no sign-up.

Tips

Getting a clean trace

  1. Start with contrast. Dark art on a plain light background traces cleanest.
  2. Use the threshold slider. Auto picks a starting point. Slide right to keep thin lines, left to drop faint ones.
  3. Remove specks. Raise it until stray dots disappear from the preview.
  4. Invert for light-on-dark art. White lettering on a black background traces the letters instead of the box.
  5. Set the real size. Enter the width you will burn at, so the file imports ready to place.

Common questions

How do I turn an image into an SVG for my laser?

Choose a PNG or JPG, move the threshold slider until the preview shows the shapes you want, set the width in millimeters, and download the SVG or DXF. Import it into LightBurn and set the layer to Fill to engrave or Line to cut.

What images trace best?

In Shapes mode, high-contrast images: logos, line art, silhouettes, text, and clip art on a plain background. For photos, use Line drawing, Tones, or Pencil sketch instead. Photos with a plain background work best in every mode.

How do I turn a photo into a line drawing for engraving?

Choose Line drawing. Raise Line scale to keep only the main outlines, lower it for fine detail, and adjust Sensitivity until the preview looks like a drawing. Thicker Line weight engraves bolder. Import the SVG into LightBurn and set the layer to Fill.

What is the difference between Tones and Pencil sketch?

Tones makes vector layers, one per shade, so you can give each shade its own power in LightBurn. Pencil sketch makes a grayscale PNG that LightBurn engraves as an image with a dithering mode like Jarvis or Stucki.

Should I use SVG or DXF?

Use SVG for LightBurn, xTool Creative Space, and Glowforge. Use DXF for software that prefers CAD files, or when you only need cut outlines. Both come out at the exact width you set.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. Tracing runs in your browser, and the image never leaves your device. If you choose to email yourself the files, only the traced shapes are sent, not the original image.

Why does my file have so many points?

Noisy images, scans, and photos create thousands of tiny shapes. Raise Remove specks, switch Curves to Smooth, or lower the threshold to simplify the file. Fewer points load faster in LightBurn and burn more smoothly.
